After hopefully regaining our balance during Libra season, many of us are now poised to make some changes and head into new directions as we start to wind down the year. And this quick and easy tarot reading can help us do just that. 💫⁠

Hi! 👋🏼 I’m Annie, writer of a best-selling tarot newsletter on Substack called Office Hours with The Tarot Professor. I’m also an English professor.

I’ve been working with tarot for ten years, and it has been such a transformative force in my life that my mission is to bring its powers of self-discovery and intuitive guidance to others.

As an academic, I’m an intellectual and even a bit of a skeptic! I’m not a fortune-teller, and I don’t read tarot professionally. I read tarot for myself and teach others to do the same. My lens as a literature and mythology professor allows me to decode tarot as the rich and ridiculously relatable text that it is. The first phase of alchemy is known as the Black P

The first phase of alchemy is known as the Black Phase, or the Nigredo, and it’s often symbolized in alchemical illustrations by a skeleton or bones. (Think: The Death card in tarot.)

In fact, the Black Phase of alchemy can be described as mortification, which literally translates to “facing the dead part” (again, consider the Death tarot card) and refers to the process of removing all impurities before we can alchemize, or transform, a baser substance into gold.

This letting go process that happens in the Black Phase of alchemy is called calcination, which literally means “reduced to bone by burning.”

These bones - what remains after the burning, after the trials and tribulations of life - symbolize our inner strength and resilience.

Bones symbolize that which cannot be burned or destroyed. Our pure essence which will remain forever.
